What is a myomectomy?

A myomectomy is a surgical procedure that removes uterine fibroids while keeping your uterus intact. This surgery doesn’t remove any of your reproductive organs, which gives you the option of giving birth and fertility in the future if desired.

The medical team at Marina OB/GYN chooses a myomectomy as a minimally invasive and conservative approach that allows them to remove your fibroids with the least extensive medical procedure. They use the latest technology to include the da Vinci® robotic surgery system, myomsure and symphion hysteroscopic myomectomy system and other minimally invasive surgical systems.  Use of these advanced, minimally invasive systems and approaches, offers many benefits.

When is a myomectomy needed?

Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths that develop in the wall of your uterus. They can also grow in your uterine lining (also known as your endometrium), in the muscle of your uterus (also known as myometrium or intramural), and outside of your uterus (also known as subserosal or pedunculated).  Very small fibroids usually don’t cause enough symptoms to require surgical removal.  However, if you do have symptoms, you might experience:

  • Pelvic pain
  • Lower back pain
  • Pain between periods
  • Abnormal menstrual bleeding
  • heavy periods
  • long periods
  • Bloating
  • Pain during intercourse

When medications can’t manage your symptoms, you can benefit greatly from a minimally invasive removal of your fibroids  During your consultation, your practitioner talks with you about your treatment options.

What causes fibroids?

Some factors that might play a role in the development of fibroids include family history or genetics, and hormones.  You might also be more prone to developing fibroids if you’re significantly overweight, have a family history of fibroid or are of African-American descent.

What are the benefits of a minimally-invasive myomectomy?

Open surgery requires a large incision, but the da Vinci robotic-assisted system only requires a few very small incisions. Other benefits include:

  • Minimal blood loss
  • Less postoperative pain
  • Minimal scarring
  • Quicker recovery
  • Faster healing

Other treatments might be discussed during your meeting with your doctor, including a hysterectomy or a uterine fibroid embolization (UFE). However, they lean toward the most minimally invasive option first for the patient’s benefit.

What can I expect during the recovery process after my myomectomy?

This question doesn’t have one concrete answer. The answer varies depending on the size of your fibroids, how many there are, and what type of surgical approach you have. You may only need a week before you’re back to your normal routine, or it might take several weeks to recover fully.

Regardless of how your fibroids are removed, you won’t have pain or uncomfortable symptoms once you heal.
