Book OnlineWhat Is Endometriosis?
Endometriosis is a condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus, most often on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and pelvic lining. Each month this tissue responds to hormonal changes by thickening and bleeding, but it has no way to leave the body. The result is inflammation, scar tissue, and adhesions that can cause significant pain and, in some women, difficulty getting pregnant. Endometriosis affects roughly one in ten women of reproductive age.
Common Symptoms of Endometriosis
- Severe menstrual cramps that worsen over time
- Chronic pelvic or lower back pain
- Pain during or after intercourse
- Painful bowel movements or urination during periods
- Heavy or irregular bleeding
- Fatigue, bloating, or nausea
- Difficulty becoming pregnant
How Endometriosis Is Diagnosed
Because its symptoms overlap with other conditions such as ovarian cysts and fibroids, endometriosis often goes undiagnosed for years. Our providers begin with a detailed history and pelvic exam, and may order an ultrasound to look for endometriomas (cysts caused by endometriosis). A definitive diagnosis is made with laparoscopy, a minimally invasive procedure that allows the surgeon to see and treat endometriosis at the same time.
Endometriosis Treatment Options
Treatment is tailored to the severity of your symptoms and whether you hope to become pregnant. Options include:
- Pain management: Anti-inflammatory medication to ease cramps and pelvic pain.
- Hormonal therapy: Birth control pills, a hormonal IUD, or other medications that slow the growth of endometrial tissue.
- Minimally invasive surgery: Laparoscopic or da Vinci robotic surgery to remove endometriosis implants and scar tissue while preserving healthy organs.
- Hysterectomy: For women with severe symptoms who have completed their families, hysterectomy may provide lasting relief.

Endometriosis FAQs
What causes endometriosis?
The exact cause is unknown. Theories include retrograde menstruation, genetics, immune system factors, and hormonal influences.
Is endometriosis pain normal period pain?
No. Period pain that keeps you from work, school, or daily activities, or that worsens over time, is not normal and should be evaluated.
Can endometriosis cause infertility?
It can. Inflammation and scar tissue may affect the ovaries and fallopian tubes. Many women with endometriosis still conceive, sometimes after surgical treatment.
How is endometriosis diagnosed?
Diagnosis starts with a history, pelvic exam, and ultrasound. Laparoscopy confirms the diagnosis and allows treatment at the same time.
Can endometriosis be cured?
There is no permanent cure, but hormonal therapy and surgical removal of endometriosis can greatly reduce symptoms and improve quality of life.
Will I need surgery?
Not always. Many women manage symptoms with medication or hormonal therapy. Surgery is recommended when symptoms persist or fertility is a concern.
Do you use robotic surgery for endometriosis?
Yes. When surgery is needed, our surgeons may use da Vinci robotic surgery for precise removal with smaller incisions.
