Same-Day IUD Placement
An intrauterine device (IUD) is one of the most effective and convenient forms of birth control available. At Marina OB/GYN, our expert team performs quick, comfortable, in-office IUD placement, with same-day visits available. Most insurance plans cover IUDs at 100 percent, often without prior authorization, and even if we don’t accept your Medi-Cal or medical group (IPA) plan, you can likely still be seen the same day for IUD placement.
Book OnlineWhat Is an IUD?
An IUD is a small, T-shaped device placed inside the uterus to prevent pregnancy. Depending on the type, it provides protection for 3 to 10 years and can be removed at any time if you decide you want to become pregnant.
Types of IUDs
Hormonal IUDs release a small amount of progestin that thickens cervical mucus to block sperm, thins the uterine lining, and can suppress ovulation. The hormone works locally in the uterus, so very little circulates through the body and side effects are uncommon. Because hormonal IUDs contain progestin only, with no estrogen, they may also lower the risk of certain female cancers and often make periods lighter, which can help women with heavy bleeding, fibroids, or endometriosis.
Nonhormonal (copper) IUDs contain copper, which repels sperm and prevents fertilization. They are a hormone-free option and work immediately.
A Nearly Painless IUD Placement
Many women hesitate to get an IUD because of stories about painful insertion. Most practices don’t use pain control for this procedure, but the providers at Marina OB/GYN have developed a way to administer local anesthetic comfortably, making IUD placement nearly painless.
You lie on the exam table as you would for a pelvic exam. Your provider places a speculum, administers the local anesthetic, and inserts the IUD through the cervix into the uterus. The entire visit takes about 15 minutes. Mild cramping afterward is normal and usually eases with over-the-counter ibuprofen.
Benefits of an IUD
- More than 99 percent effective at preventing pregnancy
- Lasts for years with no daily pill to remember
- Quickly reversible when you want to conceive
- Hormonal options often reduce period bleeding and cramps
- Hormone-free option available
When Does an IUD Start Working?
Copper IUDs prevent pregnancy immediately. Hormonal IUDs may take up to seven days to become fully effective unless placed during your period, so use backup contraception during that time. Avoid intercourse for the first 24 hours after placement.
